Families
ANGELSPEAKE
Trudy Griswold and Barbara Mark
Families are a microcosm of all that is.
In our own family we don’t have to look far in order to find every
personality type or belief system that is possible. We have
introverts and extraverts. We have Protestants, Catholics, Jews,
Buddhists, and Hindus. We have saints and sinners, elders and
babies, affluent and insolvent, bright and mentally challenged,
handicapped and healthy, educated and unlearned, talented and
gifted, kind and cross, and, of course, male and female.
A family is an amazing thing. By birth or by marriage, we all have
managed to arrange a beautiful bouquet of souls into a unit that
somehow works… or doesn’t work, depending on the lessons being
learned.
The Angels Speak:
You wonder how you came to be in your group called “family.” You
chose it for all it offered your soul. Every one picks their birth
family. There is much to learn in this unit, for no matter how much
or little you use it, the family is the practice ground to learn
many lessons while you are living on earth.
Q: My family is very small. Is this a handicap?
Angels: Your first sense of community was from your family.
They welcomed you into life. Within this system you have been given
opportunities to learn the lessons you were born to learn. Large or
small, it is a perfect unit for what you are to accomplish.
Q: My family is so dysfunctional. Why?
Angels: That is why you chose it. So you could learn to be
healthy and whole even in difficult circumstances. Sometimes parents
and families are picked because they are such a bad example! Your
job might then be to teach them better ways, or to learn from their
model how to change your own self. A family is never chosen lightly.
Your soul, even before birth, selected it carefully to maximize your
living experience.
Q: My son just married a woman from another religion that we
don’t believe in. I am finding it hard to be tolerant of her.
Angels: And that is the lesson… to expand the patterns of
thought within yourself as to what is acceptable and what is not. We
would suggest that you read a bit about what her beliefs are before
you condemn them. Perhaps they will enhance your own understanding
of who God is, or perhaps they will give you a deeper trust in the
God you already believe in. Either way, you will be more at peace.
Q: I have nothing in common with anyone in my family. In
fact, I moved as far away from them as I possibly could.
Angels: And that may be the lesson… to learn to live without
a sense of family. It is a very hard lesson. But also a great
opportunity to create your own family from nothing. If you marry,
you will inherit a family from your spouse. You may have children,
or select like-minded friends from which to create a “family of the
heart.” Birth may be the most common way to create a family, but
certainly not the only one.
Q: The military is my family.
Angels: And a good one it has been for you, too. You trust
them, love them, they support you, and you learn from them. They
have served you well as a family. Organizations can be families,
too. Churches, jobs, institutions, clubs, and towns or areas can be
a type of family. It is a rare soul who has no family at all.
Faith Builder: Think of the “families” you belong to and
enjoy the sense of community you feel within them.
